Grocery Lists Come First

Nothing like deadlines to make your creative juices churn and burn. As we prepare for our December 14 mini-screening/fundraiser, we’re busy logging and editing footage, generating publicity, rewriting scripts, revamping ideas, reviewing submissions for the Daddy’s Girl anthology, and learning how to do it all along the way!

I’ve been trying to put together key footage for my Hoo Hoo story and have been frustrated because I can’t master these video editing programs. I haven’t been able to wrap my mind around the idea that video processing requires huge memory capacity (and I don’t know if I even have these terms right) and yes, video editing is an incredibly slow process requiring incredibly huge amounts of patience.

Yuck, I want this done yesterday! And I can’t multi-task when my computer is chugging away at reading my digital video files!

Last weekend Akanke calmed me down by helping me reorganize my priorities. Instead of choosing a random handful of video clips, perhaps I should decide what story I want to tell. The way I was working, I was selecting footage via: “Oh, that’s a good one. Ooo, that’s a nice shot. Oh, that’s something clever she said.”

Akanke said this approach was like going to the grocery store without a grocery list. Sure, I could take anything off the shelf that appeals to my senses, but if I don’t know what dish I’m going to make specifically, I’ll be wasting a lot of time.

Hmm, what story do I want to tell…?
